ASIA CULTURE YOUTH WORKSHOP
2006
ASIA CULTURE ACADEMY
KOREA
Welcome to the Asia Culture Youth Workshop!
The Asia Culture Youth Workshop is a global education project that aims to promote cultural understanding for Asian youth. In the last few decades, countries in Asia have transformed from post-colonial underdeveloped situations to modern developing and developed societies. Under heavy influence of Western dominance, however, societies in this largest continent have never enjoyed enough chances to know their neighbors and cooperate among themselves. Following the development model has meant looking the West and forgetting the East in a sense. This tendency is still very much in the place, but the time is changing and the future seems to be more in the vast continent of opportunities. From Japan to Korea, China, and India, nations in Asia are rising fast followed by other neighboring societies.
The Workshop is one of the attempts to know and understand who we are and what it means to live as Asians. But it is far from a parochial regionalism. Searching Asian identity is only a way to be born as global citizens, and thus the Workshop invites participants from out of Asia as well. The Workshop is basically meant to be an open project. It is open to anybody and it is also open in terms of the contents of the program, which is composed of language learning, intercultural business communication, lectures on a variety of topics by leading Korean and Asian scholars, and diverse cultural excursions.
Participants of the program are mostly college or post-graduate students from near ten different countries. Over a ten-week period, they will learn from each other. When they go back home after the Workshop, they will turn themselves from ‘familiar strangers’ to good friends. For the rest of their lives, countries and peoples in neighborhoods will always be counted. If that happens, this project will have done the purpose properly. The Workshop is programmed with conventional teaching and learning components partly because it is an easy way to set and adjust. But in fact the program expects a lot of initiation from the participants’ part. Hope this will also happen for now.
With best wishes,
