in my grandpa's footsteps

I was talking to my mum on skype a few days ago, about the terribly July.
I told her how proud I was to participate to the conference organised by University of Tokyo and the Theory, Culture, Society review (Ubiquitous media, Asian Transformation). My mom answered: “Your grand father would have been proud of you”.
Well, it seems that I look a bit like my maternal grand-father as would my maternal grand mother say.
When I was in high school, my paternal family was trying to understand why I was so keen on literature (I may be the only cousin doing literary studies…), then on political science. Fiat lux! Of course, it was my maternal grand-father! All my relatives in Moka (my grand father’s region) are bibliovore (book eaters), fond of writing and so on. My grand father studied law at University of Tokyo. I remembered when I first came to Tokyo university last year, to conduct a few interviews for my thesis. Standing in front of the red door (akamon), pretending to be a heroin from Soseki’s novel (Sanshiro)… as if I were playing with my grand father’s shadow, a grand father whom I never had the chance to meet. But, this time, this July, it is quite serious. I am presenting two papers at this conference, one being an abstract of my thesis, and the other one being the embryo of the ideas I want to defend in a PhD-to-be. The conference will take place in the old campus. Who knows? One of the seminar rooms where I will be presenting my research might be one of my grand-father seminar room as well?
Of course, I’m writing this post in a light way… In the very inside of myself, I feel more like a hedgehog caught by the light from a car on a highway… Surprised, incapable of moving ahead…
Go back to your readings, you mouse (Habermas, yummee).
